Hemel Hempstead, August Bank Holiday 1984 5

Every army would have had a ‘baggage train’ to support it, providing supplies and helping the injured. There would also be water-carriers, who, in the Western Association to which Stamfords belong, are called pioneers. As you can imagine, re-enacting is thirsty work when you’re carrying a load of armour and pioneers are a valuable part of the team which goes onto any battlefield. Pioneers can be male or female and act as the eyes and ears at the rear of the unit while refreshing the soldiers with drinks and pulling pike men out of the block if they are injured or tiring.
